Get this from a library! The philosophy of set theory: an historical introduction to Cantor's paradise. [Mary Tiles]. Quine's set theory, New Foundations, has often been treated as an anomaly in the history and philosophy of set theory. In this book, Sean Morris shows that it is in fact well-motivated, emerging in a natural way from the early development of set theory.

Set-theoretic pluralism is an increasingly influential position in the philosophy of set theory (Balaguer [], Linksy and Zalta [], Hamkins []). There is considerable room for debate about how best to formulate set-theoretic pluralism, and even about whether the view is coherent. This book was written to serve as an introduction to logic, with in each chapter – if applicable – special emphasis on the interplay between logic and philosophy, mathematics, language and (theoretical) computer science.

Perhaps it would be for another book altogether--maybe a companion reader--but a compilation of primary sources referenced in the textbook would be quite valuable. That is, brief excerpts from, e.g, Plato, Kant, Mill, etc., that set out, in the thinkers' original words, the big ideas described in these pages would make a very handy resource.4/5(2).   Introduction: The Politics of Film Theory and Its Discontents 1. Cinematic Equality: Rancière and Film Theory After Althusser 2. Cinema’s Thought: Badiou .

I was a little surprised that this book dealt with more than just set theory, and it does this to set the stage for discussing Cantor's ideas and beyond.

The book delves into Zeno's paradox, Aristotelian logic, and other subjects, and contrasts differing views (finitist/infinitist, nominalist/realist).Cited by:   Axiomatic set theory comes on the scene, and after this the logicists program is discussed. Finally, the attempts to solve the This book is an exploration of the philosophic consequences of the infinite, both potential and actual/5.

Set Theory and its Philosophy is a key text for philosophy, mathematical logic, and computer science. in the book. Although Elementary Set Theory is well-known and straightforward, the modern subject, Axiomatic Set Theory, is both conceptually more difficult and more interesting.

Complex issues arise in Set Theory more than any other area of pure mathematics; in particular, Mathematical Logic is used in a fundamental way. The book also functions as a good introduction for anyone new to philosophy of mind because Armstrong begins with a survey of different views of the metaphysics of mind, including Cartesian dualism – the idea that we have an immaterial soul that is completely distinct from the body – and other important theories, such as behaviourism, the.

Set theory is a very general but still entirely exact theory of objects called sets. It is useful in a number of fields of philosophy, like logic, semantics, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of language and probably several others, but it is also useful.

Thus, two sets are equal if and only if they have exactly the same elements. The basic relation in set theory is that of elementhood, or membership. Quine's set theory, New Foundations, has often been treated as an anomaly in the history and philosophy of set theory.

This volume offers a guided tour of modern mathematics' Garden of Eden, beginning with perspectives on the finite universe and classes and Aristotelian logic. Author Mary Tiles further examines permutations, combinations, and infinite cardinalities; numbering the continuum; Cantor's transfinite paradise; axiomatic set theory, and more.

Explores the uses of model theory across philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of science, philosophy of logic and language, and metaphysics.

Suitable for any reader who has taken an introductory course. This book places Quine's set theory, New Foundations, within its general philosophical and historical context and shows its relation to his other work and its continuing relevance to philosophy.

It will appeal to scholars and advanced students interested in Quine and in logic more generally. Although this book deals with basic set theory (in general, it stops short of areas where model-theoretic methods are used) on a rather advanced level, it does it at an unhurried pace.

This enables the author to pay close attention to interesting and important aspects of the topic that might otherwise be skipped over. The set theory of Set Theory and Its Logic does away with stratification and is almost entirely derived from a single axiom schema.

Quine derived the foundations of mathematics once again. This book includes the definitive exposition of Quine's theory of virtual sets and relations, and surveyed axiomatic set theory as it stood circa Awards: Rolf Schock Prize in Logic and.

Michael Potter presents a comprehensive new philosophical introduction to set theory. Anyone wishing to work on the logical foundations of mathematics must understand set theory, which lies at its heart.

What makes the book unique is that it interweaves a careful presentation of the technical material with a penetrating philosophical critique.
